Yaly Hydropower Plant Set For Boost

Yaly Hydropower Company has worked closely with the Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company No 1 to complete a report on expanding production scale of the Yaly hydropower plant in Kon Tum Province’s Sa Thay District.

Accordingly, the plant will soon have an additional two turbines with capacity of 180MW each, bringing the total number of turbines to six with a combined capacity of 1,080MW.

Ta Van Luan, director of the Yaly Hydropower Company, said that with the increase in productivity, the plant would be able to supply 355.58 million kWh per year in the dry season. The move will also boost revenue from sales by VND765 billion (US$36 million) per year.

The project’s investment was estimated to be VND3.3 trillion ($158.4 million), he added.

The company has two plans for obtaining loans, under which 70 per cent of the investment will be borrowed from commercial banks at an interest rate of 10 per cent or alternatively, 85 per cent of the investment will be get from an ODA source at an interest rate of 5 per cent.

Research showed the expansion would not affect the plant’s current operations or other hydropower plants built on the lower section of the Sesan River, Luan said.

The project would also not influence the natural environment or socio-economic condition of localities because land clearance outside the current plant area would be not necessary, so residents would not have to be resettled.
