WB-funded Hydropower Plant Under Construction

VGP – Trung Son Hydropower Company Limited has secured a loan worth US $386 million from the World Bank for the construction of the 260 MW Trung Son hydropower station in central Thanh Hoa province.

According to the Trung Son Company, which is managed by the Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN), this is the first hydropower plant funded by the World Bank.

Of the loan, US $330 million will be used for procurement, building and technical assistance for the plant and US $26 million will be allocated for resettlement work for ethnic minority people who have given land for the construction of the plant and environmental protection.

The hydroelectric plant will be located on the Song Ma River in Trung Son commune, Quan Hoa district, Thanh Hoa Province. It will also help control floods for the lower areas.

It was designed to have four turbine groups, which are capable of generating 1.55 billion kWh per year when fully operating by 2018. The first turbine is expected to generate electricity to the national grid by 2017.
