South Korean Firms Eye Myanmar Power Sector

Yangon, Oct 6 (IANS) Myanmar has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with three South Korean firms to build a power plant in the country, the official media reported.

Busan Korea Biotechnology Co. Ltd., Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd. and Hana Daetoo Securities Co. Ltd. will begin the work in Thakayta township.

Myanmar also plans to build a 1,000 MW and a 200 MW solar power plants in Yangon and Mandalay respectively, Xinhua quoted the New Light of Myanmar as saying Saturday.

Myanmar produced 9.71 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2011-12.
