Hydro Plant to Power Rural Communities in Xieng Khuang

The Lao government has given approval for a domestic company to build
the Nam Pot small hydropower plant in Xieng Khuang province.

A project development agreement was signed on Tuesday in Vientiane
between Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Mr Bounthavy
Sisouphanthong and ACE Consultancy Company Director Mr Daovone
Phachanthavong.

Xieng Khuang provincial Deputy Governor Brigadier General Seumsouk
Simpha-vong, Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry President
Mr Kissana Vongsay, Energy Business Department Director General Mr
Xaypaseuth Phomsoupha, provincial Planning and Investment Deputy
Director Mr Amphaivanh Chanthalangsy and relevant officials were also
in attendance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Daovone said the hydro plant will be
built in Phatay village in Phaxay district, about 27km from Xieng
Khuang provincial capital.

The 22km Pot River runs into Seum River. The hydro plant will provide
power for nine villages with a population of 2,174 people and one
village with a population of 226 people.

Mr Daovone said ACE Consultancy Company condu-cted a survey in each
village and held meetings with village authorities and relevant
departments in the province, who all gave their approval to the
project.

The project involves a total investment of US$30 million, with
construction expected to be completed and commercial operation of the
plant to start in 2015.
